Google releases new apps for Windows and MacOS

In an exciting move for users of its services, Google has officially launched new applications for both Windows and MacOS. While many users typically access Google’s search and AI products through a web browser, these new desktop applications offer additional options that enhance user experience and efficiency.

The Windows search application, which has been in beta testing for several months, is now available for all users. This official release comes after a rough start in its beta phase, where early versions lacked the ability to be updated seamlessly, requiring users to uninstall and reinstall updates. With the new version, Google has integrated various search capabilities that allow users to search both the web and their local files directly from their desktop.

Users can easily open the Google app by pressing Alt + Space at any time. The app features a compact search interface that floats above other applications, enabling instant searches on the web or, with the necessary permissions, local files and applications. Web results are designed to mirror what users would find in a browser, including AI Overviews and AI Mode functionalities.

Moreover, the Windows app includes a context-aware feature that can pull information from the user's screen, enhancing the search experience. A Lens button allows users to highlight any portion of their screen to quickly initiate a web search. Additionally, users can share their screen—whether a single window or the entire screen—as context for their searches.

New Gemini Desktop App for MacOS

On the MacOS side, Google has rolled out its first standalone Gemini app, which focuses on AI capabilities. Although there isn't a dedicated Google search app for Mac, the Gemini app provides users with robust features that have been highly requested. According to Google’s Josh Woodward, a small team was assembled to create the Mac app in response to user demand, delivering it in under 100 days with over 100 features.

To access the Gemini app, users can press Option + Space, bringing up a prompt bar similar to the Windows version. This app allows users to ask general queries like they would on the web version of Gemini but also taps into the Mac’s windows for added context, maintaining a strong focus on AI functionalities.

The Gemini app is developed entirely in Swift and provides a comprehensive set of features akin to those available on the web version. Users can upload files, create notebooks, and utilize advanced tools such as Deep Research and Canvas directly from their desktop. Additionally, the app supports various models for generating images, videos, and music, with more features expected to roll out in the future.

However, potential users should note a significant aspect of the Gemini app’s distribution. Currently, Google has opted not to list the app in the Mac App Store. Instead, users must download and install a DMG file directly from Google’s website, which is available across all regions and supports multiple languages.

In conclusion, Google’s new desktop applications for Windows and MacOS mark a significant enhancement in how users can interact with the company’s search and AI capabilities. The introduction of the Google app for Windows and the Gemini app for MacOS reflects Google’s commitment to evolving its services to meet user needs and preferences in an increasingly digital world.
